Some 200 armed police personnel have been responding to the prison break attempts fiercely with tear gas and guns, while the inmates throw bricks, stones, sachet water and other objects at the security forces.
It is unclear whether the inmates were killed by gunshots from the police personnel who have been trying to keep the rioting prison inmates under control.
Three unconscious prison officials have been rushed out of the facility to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for treatment.
The officers in question have allegedly been struck by projectiles and were bleeding from the head.
Ambulance services are not on site and injured officials are being rushed either on foot or vehicles to the hospital.
