That is the verdict of the Chief Executive of the Telecoms Chamber, Mr. Kwaku Sakyi-Addo on government’s efforts to stop SIM boxing which is depriving the government and telecom companies of huge sums of money.
He was discussing the fall outs of the latest arrest of SIM Box operators by a task force made up of the telecom companies, the Criminal Investigations Department of the Ghana Police Service and the National Communications Authority on Joy FM and MultiTV’s news analysis programme, Newsfile, Saturday, January 31, 2015.
A seven-month operation by the taskforce led to busting of 17 persons including a former President of the Ghana Real Estates Developers Association, Dr. Alexander Tweneboa and seized tens of thousands of SIM cards used to illegally terminate international calls coming into the country.
The seven-month operation of the fraudsters is said to have lost to the state some $33 million.
Government has praised the work of the taskforce and indicated it will continue to support the police CID and the other members of the task force to track down persons engaged in SIM Box fraud.
But Mr. Sakyi-Addo insists applying the law and order approach has not worked and will not work effectively.
